2024 Email Authentication Requirements of Gmail and Yahoo
1. Basic Requirements for All Senders
Keeping your emails safe and reliable is a big deal in today’s digital world. To tackle issues like email fraud, spam, and sneaky phishing attempts, Gmail and Yahoo are tightening up their rules starting February 2024. They want to make sure our inboxes are free from harmful messages and that our data stays secure.
Here, we’ll go through the main points you should be aware of to make sure your emails stay unaffected by these new guidelines.
a) Implement SPF and DKIM:
· Use Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and Domain Keys Identified Mail (DKIM) to prevent domain spoofing.
· SPF specifies authorized mail servers, and DKIM adds a digital signature to ensure email integrity.
b) Low Spam Rates:
· Maintain a spam rate below 0.3% (per Google’s postmaster tools) to prevent flagging.
· Follow practices like double opt-in, email list verification, and cleaning up inactive addresses.
2. Additional Measures for High-Volume Senders (> 5,000 messages/day)
For those sending a large number of emails daily, extra steps are needed to meet 2024 email authentication requirements of Gmail and Yahoo. These steps ensure that high-volume senders, exceeding 5,000 messages per day, align with the advanced email security and authentication standards.
a) SPF and DKIM Authentication:
High-volume senders must have SPF and DKIM authentication methods in place.
b) DMARC Policy:
Implement Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance (DMARC) for protection against phishing attacks.
b) DMARC Policy:
Ensure messages pass DMARC alignment, checking alignment with authentication methods (SPF and DKIM).
d) One-Click Unsubscribe:
· Include list-unsubscribe headers and a visible unsubscribe link for subscribed messages.
· Unsubscribe requests must be processed within two days.
e) ARC Headers (for Email Forwarding):
Add ARC headers to outgoing emails if regularly forwarding to indicate message forwarding.
What Happens if You Miss the Deadline?
Non-compliance with email authentication measures, especially for high-volume senders, may lead to undelivered emails to Gmail and Yahoo accounts.
This can significantly impact effective communication with customers, potentially affecting business operations and customer engagement.
